Samsung Illustration system

We developed a figurative illustration language for Samsung Health, with its application on over 100 assets. We played with vibrant colors, gradients and dynamic layouts — but we also crafted some quirky tiny reactions motivating wellness audiences around the world.

We teamed up with Samsung to create a custom illustration system for Samsung Health, the app that helps track key aspects of daily life — like fitness, nutrition, and sleep patterns — to support overall well-being. Our work includes 90+ visual assets, from hero illustrations to animations, and reaction icons, all tailored to enhance wellness content. Using a color palette built around vibrant contrasts and dynamic gradients, we designed visuals that make the journey to a healthier, more active life feel smooth and intuitive. Each illustration pairs with a specific article, covering topics like “How much sleep do I need?” or “Ways to improve stamina.” With Samsung Health’s diverse user base—from athletes and fitness enthusiasts to casual users—we crafted a reliable, colorful, and user-friendly illustration style that enhances engagement. By making health and wellness content visually appealing, we help users stay motivated on their journey to a healthier life.

The Energy Score characters and daily brief serve as motivators for a healthier lifestyle and self-care, using abstract, globally understandable shapes to convey emotions positively, even when addressing negative concepts. The design system reinforces clarity and warmth through bold colors, subtle motion, and a sense of progression, making energy levels feel tangible and encouraging engagement. We have added a subtle motion behavior to emphasize the dynamism and empathy of the expressions while ensuring it remains non-overwhelming in an informational UI context.

These illustrations reinforce highly informative content across fitness, medical health, sleep, nutrition, mental balance, and energy. The challenge was to create a flexible visual language that ranges from microscopic concepts (e.g., red blood cells, cholesterol) to broader themes like movement and well-being, ensuring clarity and accessibility.
The system is built on two levels of interpretation: a main element conveying the core concept and a supporting element that enhances the narrative or introduces a metaphor. These are not decorative visuals but informative tools, balancing clarity with warmth. Despite subject variety, cohesion is maintained through recurring elements, compiled into a visual library within the guidelines. Human representation is replaced with stylized silhouettes or semi-transparent gradients for inclusivity. Since most illustrations were static rather than animated, we intentionally used dynamic layouts—often slightly off-balance or floating—to create a sense of motion and energy. The style blends didactic and metaphorical elements, making complex ideas intuitive. Abstract details contribute to add dynamism and emotion, while gradients enhance depth and physicality. The flat, high-contrast color approach ensures strong visual impact and readability across different contexts.
