Nubank Illustration system

We created a distinctive, ownable illustration system for Nubank—simple, flexible, and built around one clear idea: transparency.

As part of Nubank’s global rebrand, we were asked by their team in collaboration with the Brazilian agency Polar.Ltda, to turn one of their core values—transparency—into a visual language. When it comes to money, clarity matters. So we built a system that makes things feel open, intuitive, and easy to navigate. The language unfolds on multiple levels. At its core lies the in-app illustration system: a set of simply designed and animated elements that guide the user experience while making it more engaging and delightful. All animations were crafted in Rive, ensuring seamless integration within the Nubank app. We challenged Rive’s limits to create animations with a subtle sense of three-dimensionality—achieved through transparency, motion, and completing a sleek, minimal UI design. Building on this foundation, we developed a richer, more storytelling-driven visual language for Nubank’s editorial content. Transparency remains a central theme, elevated through the refined use of gradients and human presence, bringing warmth and tangibility to the experience. For broader communication formats—like billboards and OOH—we translated the transparency concept into the 3D realm, crafting stylized, glassy coins and geometric forms. Every detail—from composition to layering—was designed to embody transparency. It’s more than a visual style: it’s a narrative principle. A way to guide users, highlight messages, and make even complex topics feel simple and approachable.

Transparency is deeply rooted in Nubank’s identity—and it’s what makes this illustration system truly theirs. By playing with different levels of opacity, we created a language that feels open, accessible, and unmistakably Nu. In Brazilian Portuguese, nu means “naked” or “bare”—a word that perfectly captures the brand’s commitment to honesty, simplicity, and stripping away the unnecessary. Our visuals reflect that same spirit: clean, essential, and confidently nu.

To make the system truly scalable, we also developed a set of clear, practical guidelines. These give Nubank’s internal team the tools to use the illustration language with consistency—and the freedom to expand it as new needs emerge. From structure and layering to style and tone, everything is built to be both solid and adaptable.

Guidelines

The system was built to scale beyond the app. Starting from in-app assets, we created a visual foundation that extends to editorial content and high-impact campaigns. Characters evolved from simple avatars to more expressive figures, blending UI elements with abstract details. The goal was to define a flexible style—clear enough to guide future collaborators, but open to interpretation. Both 2D and 3D assets serve as visual guidelines, helping ensure consistency across formats while allowing room for creative adaptation.
