YouTube Studio Moments
From signals to language — a motion-driven visual system for YouTube Studio Moments, where luminance, color and animation shape expressive product experiences.
Working closely with the YouTube Studio creative team, illo was brought in to define and formalize a visual language for Moments — evolving an existing luminance-driven direction into a scalable system.
We translated this direction into a flexible framework of principles and motion behaviours — balancing clarity, consistency and creative autonomy across teams.
At its core, the system uses luminance as a language: each illustration acts as a light source, combining vibrant gradients, soft glows and color interactions to create depth and optimism. Blending illustration and motion thinking, Moments were designed as dynamic, expressive elements — built on cinematic fluidity and snappy accents.
The result is a scalable library of 50+ Lottie assets, optimized for real product environments.
Moments become more than notifications — they become something that resonates, recognizes effort, and feels worth sharing.

Combining illustration and motion thinking, we designed moments as dynamic, expressive elements — built on two core motion principles: cinematic fluidity and snappy accents.
Moving away from literal storytelling, we built a balance between abstract illustration and recognizable forms — using simple, buoyant shapes and layered compositions to create visuals that are flexible, scalable, and universally readable.
Light and color define hierarchy, shaping how elements emerge and interact across surfaces, while supporting a progressive range of expressions — from subtle signals to more immersive, full-bleed celebrations, depending on the level of achievement.
The project turned Moments into a consistent, expressive language aligned with YouTube’s scale. By defining principles rather than rigid rules, we enabled teams to create and extend the system autonomously.
At the same time, we demonstrated that a rich, gradient-driven visual language can perform reliably in product environments — without compromising clarity, depth or expressiveness.
And for creators: Moments become more than notifications — they become something that resonates, recognizes effort, and feels worth sharing.
